Introduction

A bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure to replace bone marrow that has been damaged or destroyed by disease. This procedure involves transplanting stem cells which can be taken from bone marrow or blood (peripheral) or the umbilical cord blood.

Procedures

A stem cell transplant is usually done after chemotherapy and radiation is complete. The stem cells are delivered into the bloodstream, usually through a central venous catheter.

Indications

Bone marrow transplants are performed when a person’s marrow isn’t healthy enough to function properly. This could be due to benign blood disorders, or cancer-related blood disorders.
